I just signed the ONE Declaration

"WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget. WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.”
_____

The ONE Campaign is a new effort to rally Americans to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty.

Each ONE of us can make a difference. Together as ONE we can change the world.

We can beat:

  • AIDS
  • Starvation
  • Extreme poverty
ONE billion people live on less than ONE dollar a day.

ONE by ONE, we can help them help themselves.

bob,
i'm really glad that you did that! one of the most important things a person can give a charity is their voice! you and i both know that the world won't know about these types of problems and what can be done to solve them, until people begin to speak up!

I apologize for the cynicism but what do these signatures do to curb hunger, poverty, or AIDS? Do you have to donate money or volunteer time, etc. before you're able to sign?

The first step in any effort for change is to create VISION. After the vision is cast, then action can be specifically taken.

Many are simply unaware of the crisis of hunger and AIDS we have in this world. So, ONE gets people to hear the problem in order to envision the efforts that we will need to do.

Then people start to do things, like the Christian leaders who sent President Bush the letter asking him to "lead an historic deal with other nations to help Africa and the poorest nations overcome global AIDS and extreme poverty."

Also,
Having signed up at the ONE website, this past week I received a notice that let me know of a bill that my congressman could vote on that would reverse his earlier vote that lowered American support for Africa.
